私たちが言語を学ぶとき、考慮すべき4つの異なるスキルがあります。

　　1. リスニング

　　2. スピーキング

　　3. ライティング

　　4. リーディング

すべての言語学習者は、言語ごとにこの4つのカテゴリーにおいて異なる流暢さを持っています。

もし、ある言語で総合的な学力を身につけようと思ったら、これら4つのカテゴリーすべてで高い流暢性を身につける必要があります。

しかし、そのためにはどうすればよいのか、よく誤解されていることがあります。日本の学校では、文法や語彙の覚え方を教えることが多く見られます。しかし、これは「書く」ことに関しては良いことかもしれませんが、「話す」ことや「聞く」ことに関しては役に立ちません。

もし、子どもの英語力をあるカテゴリーで向上させたいのであれば、そのカテゴリーに関連したインプットをする必要があります。ライティングのサポートが必要なら文法のサポートを、スピーキングの向上が必要なら英語で会話する機会を増やす必要があります。

同様に、読むことをサポートする必要があると感じたら、学習者が読むのに興味深い本を提供する手助けをする必要があります。

しかし、これらの言語スキルが孤立しているわけではなく、限られたリソースの中で、あるスキルに時間をかけることで、他のスキルの向上にもつながることを理解することが重要です。

ここでは、一度に複数のスキルを向上させるためのアイデアをいくつかご紹介します。

　　1. 声に出して読む。

　　2. 話す前に頭の中で翻訳しない。

　　3. 受動的リスニング （ながら聞き/聞き流し・・・何かしながら英語の音声を聞く）

　　4. 手書きで書く

これらのことを意識しながら言語学習に取り組むと効果的でしょう。

When we are learning a language there are 4 different skills that we should consider.

　　1. Listening

　　2. Speaking

　　3. Reading

　　4. Writing

All learners of language have different fluencies in these 4 categories per language.

If we would like to achieve total academic fluency in a language, we will need to have high fluency in all 4 of these categories.

How we can achieve this is often misunderstood. In Japanese schools children are often taught grammar and how to memorize vocabulary. This may be good for writing fluency but it does not serve the child in speaking or listening.

If we would like to improve our child’s English ability in a certain category, it is necessary to provide input that pertains to that category. If their writing needs support we should provide grammar support, if their speaking needs improvement we need to provide more spaces to have conversations in English.

Similarly, if we feel that their reading needs to be supported more, we should help provide interesting books for learners to read.

However, that does not mean that these language skills are isolated and with limited resources it is important to understand that time spent on a skill may also lead to improvement in another skill area.

Here are a few ideas for improving multiple skills at one time.

　　1. Read out loud.

　　2. Do not translate in your head before you speak.

　　3. Passive listening

　　4. Write by hand.

Learning with these considerations in mind will surely lead to benefits in your language acquisition. ​
