「英語教育とモチベーション」
子どもの英語教育に関してどのようにモチベーションを上げればいいのか、教育者や保護者の方々にとってこれは大きな課題です。
幼少時には長年うまくいっていたことが、10代になるとうまくいかなくなることもあります。ここでは、私がよくクライアントと共有するヒントをご紹介します。
1. もし、お子さんが「勉強したくない」と言ったら？
英語のインプットの仕方を変えるのが一番です。
お子さんが英語に触れる環境を変えるということです。
子どもがマンネリ化した文法の積み上げ学習の繰り返しでは
英語を勉強したくないと思うのは不思議なことではありません。
英会話に通うことや教科書で文法の学習をすることだけが、英語の勉強ではありません。
2. 英語を学んでいる、または英語を話す「友人を作る」
「英語学習は勉強」だという概念を離れて、
英語を生活の一部としてとり入れることが重要です。そうすれば、
子供たちが楽しいと思うことや興味があることと英語学習は自然に結びつけられます。
3. 生活の中での英語の重要性を「子供に選択」させる
現代社会においてなぜ英語が大切なのかを説明し、子どもに何を期待したいのか、
子どもと一緒に計画を立ててください。あなたが期待することを伝えたら、
子どもが環境や自分自身に何を期待しているのかをじっくり聞いて、あなたと
子どもの両方に合った計画を立ててください。
言語習得には、「基礎文法の習得」と「その知識を使用しなければならない環境」
の両方が不可欠です。Native speaker であっても、
母国語を駆使するためには長期間における「教育」と「環境」が必要です。
English Language Education and Motivation This is a major challenge for educators and parents who are trying to figure out how to motivate their children with regards to their English education. What worked well for many years in childhood may not work so well in the teenage years. Here are some tips that I often share with my clients.
1. If your child says, "I don't want to study,"
the best thing you can do is change the way he or she is exposed to English input. This means changing the environment in which your child is exposed to English. It is no wonder that children do not want to study English if they are stuck in a rut, learning a stack of grammar all over again. Going to an English conversation school or learning grammar from a textbook is not the only way to study English. 2. Make friends who are learning English or who speak English. It is important to move away from the notion that "learning English is studying" and make English a part of your daily life. This way, children will naturally associate English learning with things they enjoy and are interested in.
3. Let children choose the importance of English in their lives. Explain why English is important in today's society and make a plan with your child about what you expect from him or her. Once you have communicated your expectations, listen carefully to what your child expects from the environment and from himself/herself, and develop a plan that works for both you and your child. Language acquisition requires both the acquisition of basic grammar and an environment in which that knowledge must be used. Even native speakers need long-term "education" and "environment" in order to make full use of their native language.
